Warriors place five in J.V. race, McVea finishes sixth overall
The Westside Warrior Cross Country team started off the year at the Charlie Thorell Invite in Seward, Nebraska on Thursday, Sept. 1. Running on one of the hottest days for a cross country meet in many years, the Warriors ran a strong first race and didn't let the 95-degree heat bother them.
All boys ran in the same race, but for the results junior varsity and varsity runners are split. The Warriors brought home four medals in the J.V. race with Joe Coldanghise, Jordan Wheeler, Joe Hack, Sam Jensen, and Ben Fenwick earning spots in the top 15.
In the varsity results, Andrew McVea finished sixth overall, moving up nearly 20 spots after the first half-mile of the race. The race is scored using Class B, C, D scoring methods, which means only the top four are counted. Class A counts five runners. Officially, Westside finished sixth out of 14 teams. If the meet would have been scored using Class A methods, the Warriors would have finished third overall. The Charlie Thorell Invite also awards combined boys and girls results. In the combined division, with the help of a second place finish by the Westside girl's squad, the Warriors finished second overall, trailing only Seward who won both boy's and girl's races.
"This is a great start to the season, no doubt," fifth-year head coach Derek Fey said. "Last year we didn't have anyone place in the junior varsity division, this year we had five. All of these guys put in a great deal of work this summer and we truly are just beginning to see the benefits. The real results will come in mid-October."
The Warriors head to Walnut Grove Park on Friday for the Millard South Invitational.
