impressive performances mark the opening of cross country
Both the JV and varsity squads turned in impressive performances for the first meet of the year. As has been the case since 2007, Westside opened up its cross country season at the Charlie Thorell Invite in Seward, Nebraska.
The varsity team placed second overall out of 18 teams, scoring four runners as the Class B rules dictate. The JV squad dominated the race with a 20 point showing scoring five runners. The second place team in the JV race, Lincoln North Star was far behind with 52 points.
"This was the performance we wanted to start with in Seward," Westside Head Coach Derek Fey said. "Everyone set a course best which is a rarity."
The seasonably mild temperatures led to huge personal bests, and many all-time bests.
The top performance for the Warriors was turned in by senior Jordan Wheeler. Wheeler finished second overall with an all-time personal best of 17 minutes, 30 seconds. Close behind was fellow senior Max Knight, finishing fourth with a 17:33. Milo Greder was Westside's third runner, finishing 10th overall, running a 17:53. Greder's time set a new course record for a freshman as well as taking home the fastest freshman in the race honors. Rounding out the varsity team was sophomore Jakob Phillips (21st in 18:24), sophomore Alec Reilly (22nd in 18:25), and seniors Stuart Willett and Dylan Sorrell (23rd/24th in 18:27/18:28, respectively). Sorrell won the JV division as Seward was using Class B scoring rules.
The JV squad was led by senior Nate Selby who finished second in the JV division with a 19:16. Rounding out the 1, 2, 3 finish in the JV race was junior Mitchell Coziahr, finishing 31st with a 19:20. Notable freshman JV performances were turned in by Wyatt Gosnell (19:55) and Trevor Mumford (20:08).
"Both squads have been looking great in practice and our time trials. This is just the beginning of a great season," Fey said.
