Warriors place 5th overall at stacked millard south invite
Westside's cross country team traveled to Walnut Grove Park on Friday to compete in the Millard South Invite. The race featured six of the top 10 teams in the state, including numbers 1 (Millard South), 2 (Prep) and 4 (Lincoln Southwest). The Warriors did not disappoint, turning in another great team performance by finishing fifth overall (out of 11 teams). Westside took down Lincoln East, the seventh ranked team in the state.
"The varsity team really displayed smart racing strategy today," head coach Derek Fey said. "They didn't go out too hard and were able to move through the field as a group. I was impressed."
Not to be outdone by the varsity team, the junior varsity squad pulled out a fourth place finish in one of the largest fields this season. Depth became the Warriors strength as the 1-6 man pack-time was 44 seconds, the best of any team at the meet.
"This is the best JV squad we've had since I've been coaching here," Fey said. "When you have varsity guys from last year running on JV you know that the team will be competitive."
The varsity team was led again by Jordan Wheeler, who broke 17-minutes for the first time in his career, finishing 17th overall with a 16:56. Senior Max Knight took three seconds off his time at the same meet last year, placing 25th in 17:19. Freshman phenom Milo Greder smashed his personal best set last week (17:53) with a 17:21. Next in for Westside was sophomore Jakob Phillips, finishing in 17:27. Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors was senior Stuart Willett, setting an all-time personal best at 17:45. Senior Dylan Sorrell was not far behind, also setting a new all-time personal best of 17:47. Sophomore Alec Reilly kept the streak alive, setting a new all-time personal best with an 18:05.
The Warriors scored 143 points, edging Lincoln East by three points. District teams Grand Island and Bellevue West finished 8th and 10th, respectively.
The JV squad was led by junior Mitchell Coziahr who took 40 seconds off last week's time, placing 16th with a time of 18:40. Freshman Wyatt Gosnell took nearly a full minute off his Seward time, running 18:58. The Warriors then had a pack of runners finish within seconds of one another. Senior Nate Selby, sophomore Reece Kremers, junior Aaron Duin and freshman Trevor Mumford all finished within two seconds of each other, running 19:20, 19:20, 19:21 and 19:22, respectively.
The junior varsity team scored 122 points, just 11 points behind third-place Lincoln Southeast.
"Coach Eastman and I can't stop talking about how impressed we are with this group," Fey said. "We just have to stay focused on our own race and things will take care of themselves."
