2013 Westside Cross country team looks for state berth
Last team to qualify for state back in 2007
The boys cross country team will be looking to qualify for the state cross country meet in Kearney for the first time since 2007. The Warriors will be returning several top varsity runners from last year, including seniors Max Knight and Stuart Willett.
"Last year was a tough ending for sure," head boys coach Derek Fey said. "Stuart struggled at districts, battling mononucleosis. Max just missed qualifying individually by less than .5 seconds. It was a tough way to end the year. This year looks very promising."
The last team to qualify for state from Westside included some of the best runners to walk the halls of the school. Wol Nymun finished fourth overall and the team placed fourth as well, tying the best finish by any Westside boy's team ever.
The Warriors have an impressive corps of freshmen coming up in 2013. As 8th graders, the incoming freshmen won the first ever Nebraska State Middle School Cross Country Championships, held at Papillion-South High School. They were led by incoming freshman Trevor Mumford, who finished the 3,000 meter course in 11:15, to finish 11th overall.
"If this group trains well over the summer, many exciting possibilities lie ahead of us," Fey said. "This is one of the largest incoming class and most talented group that we've had come in since I've been here."
The Warriors open the season at the Charlie Thorell Invite in Seward, Nebraska, on September 5. The state cross country meet is scheduled for Friday, October 25.
"I have no doubt there are at least two guys that can qualify individually for state. I know they'll want company," Fey said.
